Hospital bowled over by Essex Cricket Club Christmas visit

Essex Cricket Club hit a six for kindness by visiting Broomfield Hospital to spread Christmas cheer to patients, staff and families.

Members of both the men’s and women’s team took time out of their busy winter training schedule to deliver festive joy, helping make sure no one feels stumped by the holiday blues.

Essex players Jamie Porter, Tom Westley, Shane Snater, Kelly Castle, Jo Gardner, and Cordelia Griffith all stepped up to the crease for the visit. They visited the Children’s Ward, meeting and chatting to patients of all ages and brought smiles to their faces, along with gifts.

Tom Westley, Essex Men's Captain, said: “It was really eye-opening to visit Broomfield Hospital today and see first-hand what a wonderful job the staff here do, especially at this time of year.

“Sport has enormous power to uplift spirits, and if my teammates and I can provide even a little bit of joy at Christmas to children and families who have so much going on, that means the world.”

Angela Poulter, Paediatric Matron at the hospital, said: "Such visits are a reminder to everyone of the power of sport to unite and uplift people, highlighting that Essex Cricket Club aren't just stars on the pitch, but also champions of the heart."
