Routine histology specimen details

(brief description of test, what its used for)

Sample Requirements

Sample type:  Histology tissue/biopsies

Sample volume: An adequate amount of fixative should be used to completely cover the specimen (10x specimen volume).

Tube type:  Histology specimen pots – with 10% formal saline fixative solution

Special sample instructions: 10% formal saline fixative solution must be used for all routine histology specimens. An adequate amount of fixative should be used to completely cover the specimen (10x specimen volume). Inadequate fixation will result in poor morphology which may affect interpretation, any further tests and delay the report turnaround time.  A clearly labelled appropriate sized container must be used. The lids must be correctly fitted and sealed.

Turnaround time:

Small biopsies: 7 days; Large specimen: 10 working days (unless requiring decalcification). Please be aware that additional investigations such as immunohistochemistry and molecular testing may be required, which may lengthen the required turnaround time.
