Cancer info drop-in session will help explore and improve patient care

Cancer Nurse Specialists are helping raise awareness about the disease as part of World Cancer Day (February 4).

The dedicated staff from Southend Hospital will be hosting a number of information stalls in the Hospital’s old main entrance on Tuesday 4 February, between 9.30am and 1.30pm.

They’ll be there with a friendly ear, general information and advice, or will be able to signpost those attending where to get more information if needed.

There will also be essential information from the Macmillan Centre, as well as details about the ongoing Spotlight Radiotherapy Appeal from Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation – which has just smashed its initial £600,000 target but is now hoping to raise even more money.

Those attending will also be able to find out more about how the exciting world of genomic sequencing offers patients with cancer the possibility of receiving a more precise diagnosis at the start of their treatment pathway. Genomics can also help identify at risk family members who may be eligible for cancer prevention strategies.

Emma Chaplin, Deputy Director of Nursing for Cancer, said: “We all know someone who has been impacted by cancer in some way and are encouraging people to share their thoughts with us about our range of cancer services and the care they or loved ones have received.

“Such conversations are vital to help us improve our services for those having cancer treatment, as well giving us the opportunity to talk about some of the investment we’ve made to enhance patient care and some of the advances in treatment.”

There’s no need to book for the informal event and there will also be tea, coffee and biscuits available.
