Fearless teen’s abseil in thanks for 14 years of ‘incredible’ hospital care

A 14-year-old boy with a condition, so rare, that specialists have not found another person in the world with the same diagnosis, is taking on a daring abseil charity challenge.
Finley Ranson, from Battlesbridge, is going to amazing lengths to raise money ahead of his abseil down Southend Hospital’s tower block, something he’s waited years to be old enough to do.
Having received care from the Phoenix Children’s Ward at Broomfield Hospital since he was seven days old, he and his family want to give something back and are hoping to push their fundraising total to £25,000.
They are taking part in the Tackle the Tower abseil, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Organised by Mid and South Essex Hospital Charity, it is taking place on Saturday 17 May.
Finley’s condition means he has a severe lipid allergy and has never been able to eat. Instead, he receives essential nutrients through an infusion directly to his heart twice a week, with each session lasting between six and eight hours.
He said: “I’ve wanted to do this abseil for so long - to thank the nurses who have cared for me and to give back to the children’s ward. But most of all, I want to reach the ground faster than anyone else in my group!
“My mum did it in 2023 and said she was petrified - I’m sure I’ll make it down much faster than she did.”
Six of Finley’s family and friends will also be taking part in the abseil to support the cause. The £25,000 target is something his family and friends have worked towards for years in gratitude for the incredible care he has received.
Those feeling brave enough to take part in Tackle the Tower can sign up at www.msehospitalscharity.co.uk. Registration costs £45 per person, with a minimum fundraising target of £100.
