Fun and games help hospital patients regain strength
Patients enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon of sports and activities, thanks to a specially designed sports day.
The Therapy team at St Andrew’s Burns and Plastics Centre, Broomfield Hospital, organise the annual event to help patients regain strength and improve their ability to move after a burn injury or plastic surgery.
Patient Eric Hamilton, from Colchester, said: “The event was brilliant! Stretching is a good therapy and doing activities like this makes you forget that you’re exercising. I had fun and it felt great beating my therapist at everything.”
Badminton, crazy golf, throwing and catching were enjoyed by staff and patients, including children having treatment on the burns ward. Activities designed for older patients or those with limited physical mobility meant that everyone could take part.
Lottie Armitage, Senior Occupational Therapist, said: “It’s nice to see patients having fun and laughing. It’s beneficial for their wellbeing to be outside and in a non-clinical environment.
“Some children also said that they’d missed their school sports days, so for us to host one was really rewarding for them.”
