Making mealtimes better for patients with mobility issues

Patients are finding it easier to eat during mealtimes in hospital, thanks to new specialist cutlery.

Moulded knives, forks and spoons have been recently introduced across Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust after a successful pilot earlier this year. The chunky handles on the cutlery are easy to hold and have grips, meaning many more patients are able to feed themselves.

Dawn Patience, Director of Nursing, said: “Our patients are happier because they can enjoy their food in their own time, independently. This means that many of our patients can now feed themselves without having to rely on help from the ward staff or one of our feeding buddies.”

The cutlery was paid for by Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity via their grants programme.
