NHS 75 - Mum and daughter proud to be part of the NHS family
Mum and daughter, Sue Thomson and Louise Chapman from Chelmsford, both work in Radiology at Broomfield Hospital. They don’t just work at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust as part of the Trust family, but very much feel part of the wider NHS family.
Louise, a Senior Radiology Administrative Assistant, joined the Trust almost six years ago, followed by mum, Sue, in February 2021. Working together isn’t an issue for them as it’s something they’ve done before.
Sue said: “Years ago I worked in Debenhams and after a while Louise joined as a casual member of staff, working Saturdays and school holidays while she was a student. Back then I was the senior member of staff and now the roles have reversed. I try not to mother her too much at work but it’s nice, if I’m in the office, to see Louise there.”
Louise agreed with her mum, adding: “Yes, it’s great working together, we don’t see each other that often but when we do, I really enjoy it. There’s quite a lot of people here who are family members, whether it’s husband and wife or parent and child, there’s a lovely feeling of community spirit. It’s one of the best things, I think, about working here. It feels like one big family.”
For Sue the best thing about her role is the variety it gives her. She said: “I’ve just been working in MRI, sometimes I might be in the office, other times I could be in antenatal, emergency x-ray or booking appointments. Every day is different, you get to speak to and meet different people and help put patients at ease, I’m quite a chatty person so I really enjoy that.”
