Radiology software award shortlisted for helping reduce patient waiting times

Patients from across mid and south Essex, including those with cancer and heart disease, are getting their results faster.
It’s thanks to a software Called OptiRad, used at Southend Hospital, which is making a big difference to how quickly staff can review and send results back.
Now up for a national award, it’s been in use for the last year and helps radiologists - the doctors who look at x-rays, scans, and other images - work more efficiently.
The system has already helped the hospital increase the number of scans they can report on by 12.1% and reduce waiting times for results by 18%, improving care and reducing patient waiting times.
James Currell, Acting Divisional Director of Clinical and Support Services at the Trust said: “It’s been a great success so far, making a real difference for both patients and staff. The £153,000 a year we’re saving is a clear sign of how OptiRad is helping us reduce our reliance on outsourcing.”
Having proved successful at Southend, the Trust is now working with clinical teams within Radiology Departments at Basildon and Broomfield hospitals to help benefit more patients and staff.
The software was developed by radiology technology company Hexarad and has now been shortlisted for the 2025 Health Service Journal Independent Healthcare Provider Awards.
It’s in the category of Best Provider of Diagnostic Services and winners will be announced at the end of March.
