Sensational cycle scheme sees hospital staff go on two wheels

Hospital staff are being helped to cycle thanks to the renewal of a revolutionary free bike scheme that has seen car journeys plummet.

Porters, healthcare assistants, housekeepers and others based at Basildon Hospital can apply for a free bike from Essex Pedal Power, a programme which encourages active and sustainable travel.

The bike is initially given as a loan for six months to eligible staff members, including those who live in or around Basildon. If the recipient uses the bike regularly then after six months they can keep it, free of charge.

Sony Varghese, a Healthcare Assistant who received a bike, said: "I'm grateful to Essex Pedal Power for providing me with the bike and have thoroughly enjoyed being able to cycle. It has been a fantastic opportunity for me to explore the beauty of Basildon during my free time, providing me with a new perspective of the area. I feel part of a community now where I'm able to connect with other cyclists."

The scheme was extended after its launch in 2023, and so far over 140 bikes have been handed over. More than 2,600 trips have been taken by hospital staff which has led to two-thirds fewer car journeys, saving more than half a tonne of carbon dioxide emissions.

The partnership has also seen investment by Essex County Council in new street lighting at the approach to the hospital, as well as an additional secure cycle shelter at Basildon Hospital.

Fiona Ryan, Managing Director at the Trust, said: “Essex Pedal Power is an important partnership for our Trust, which supports staff who are vital to our hospital to lead an active lifestyle while reducing their car journeys. I’m really pleased that the programme is being extended with the Active Wellbeing Society and Basildon Council, meaning that more staff will benefit – and I’m sure we’ll see more orange bikes around the hospital.”

Cllr Jack Ferguson, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Sport and Communities at Basildon Council said: “Active Travel is a fantastic way to incorporate physical activity into everyday life, improving our mental and physical health and wellbeing as well as reducing carbon emissions. It’s great to partner with Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, working together to tackle inequalities across our borough.”

Lydia Smith, Essex Pedal Power Coordinator at the Active Wellbeing Society, said: “Our team are thrilled to provide more free bicycles to Basildon Hospital staff, continuing the positive work we have done over the last year in partnership with the Trust. The bikes are helping staff to be more active, but also save money and time on their work commute. We are looking forward to supporting more NHS staff on their cycling journey.”
