It’s music to the ears of volunteers at Southend Hospital Radio that the station has been shortlisted for two national awards.

The radio station - which this year celebrates 45 years since it took to the airwaves and broadcasts free of charge 24/7 to patients - has been nominated for a pair of Hospital Broadcasting Association (HBA) awards.

It has been shortlisted in the categories of Best Station Promotion and Best Specialist Music Programme for its sounds of the 80s show.

Peter Sipple, Chairman at Southend Hospital Radio, said: “It’s great to be recognised in this year’s national awards. Our service has been able to continue broadcasting to staff and patients despite the Covid lockdowns, providing much-needed information and entertainment.

“Our team is made up entirely of volunteers, and it’s always rewarding to receive recognition for our radio service.”

The station provides a mix of music, news, chat, comedy and entertainment, as well as information of interest to patients about what’s happening in the hospital. Friends and relatives of those in hospital can also listen online.

The annual awards will be held virtually later this year by HBA, which represents 170 stations across the UK.
