Sports day supports recovery of burns and plastics patients

Burns sports day

Burns and plastics patients at Broomfield Hospital enjoyed a host of specially designed activities as part of a sports day to help in their recovery and movement.

The afternoon of sport offered a range of seated and standing activities, designed to match the abilities of those taking part, meaning they could try everything from badminton to football and golf.

The annual event was organised by the therapy team at the internationally renowned St Andrew’s burns and plastics centre, with the day designed  to help patients regain their strength and mobility after a burn’s injury or plastic surgery. It not only promoted physical well-being, but also boosted the patients' morale and sense of accomplishment.

Lottie Armitage, Senior Occupational Therapist at the Hospital, part of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our sports day is a great way for staff and patients to have some fun and get in some additional movement. Movement is so important for a patient’s recovery and a sports day is the perfect way to incorporate this.”

“It’s nice to be able to get off the wards and bring some variety and brightness to the patient's day. Staff enjoy it too of course – we all love supporting our patients and cheering each other on.”
