Lung cancer

Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer with approximately 43,000 people diagnosed with a type of lung cancer every year.

To find out more about lung cancer, visit https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/lung-cancer.

What we offer

Depending on the stage of the disease treatments can vary. Surgery is undertaken in the Cardiothoracic Centre in Basildon Hospital, whilst radiotherapy/stereotactic radiotherapy is delivered in Southend Hospital.

Chemotherapy and immunotherapy can be given at both Broomfield and Southend Hospital. Both respiratory and oncology clinics are held at all three of our main hospitals.

The lung cancer team also provide support for those patients diagnosed with a rarer form of cancer called mesothelioma – to find out more about this, visit https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/mesothelioma. Current treatment for mesothelioma consists of chemotherapy or immunotherapy.

Inpatients

All three hospitals provide an inpatient acute oncology service (AOS) and palliative care.

Outpatients

Respiratory and oncology outpatient clinics are run at all three of our main hospital sites and are supported by the lung cancer clinical nurse specialist teams. Some sites offer nurse led post-surgical follow up clinics as well as holistic needs assessment clinics.
