Blood cancer (Haematology)

Blood cancer is a type of cancer that affects your blood cells.

Over 40,000 people are diagnosed with a blood cancer each year in the UK, and over 250,000 people are currently living with it.

Types of blood cancer

There are different types of blood cancer, including:

  • leukaemia 
  • lymphoma
  • myeloma
  • myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
  • myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN)

What we offer

Each blood cancer has different symptoms, treatments and prognoses.

We hold specialist clinics for patients Monday to Friday at all three of our main hospitals (Broomfield, Basildon and Southend), and also at Orsett Hospital.

We have a multidisciplinary team of healthcare workers that include consultants, junior doctors, clinical nurse specialists and healthcare assistants.

Support groups

Mid Essex myeloma support group

All meetings have been sponsored by Dr A. Islam, consultant haematologist at Southend Hospital. Each event takes place in Balmoral Community Centre, Salisbury Avenue, Westcliff-on-Sea SS0 7AU.

  • 24 January — between 9.30am and 11.30am. Dr. Islam, consultant haematologist at Southend hospital discusses the latest treatment in multiple myeloma
  • 28 March — between 9.30am and 11.30am. Dr. Pavel Kotoucek, consultant haematologist at Broomfield hospital discusses bispecific antibodies in myeloma treatment.
  • 25 May — between 4pm and 6pm. Tango therapy session. Please bring your friends and family, all welcome for fun. All abilities can take part.
  • 18 July — between 4pm and 6pm. Indoor family picnic. Please bring your family, friends, food and drink.
  • 26 September — between 4pm and 6pm. An informal get together over tea/coffee, cake and a chat.
  • 28 November — between 9.30am and 11.30am. informal get together over tea/coffee and a mince pie (all provided).

Mid Essex myeloma and stem cell transplant patient support group coffee morning

We would like to invite all myeloma and stem cell transplant patients (before and after) to join our local support group for informal gatherings over tea/coffee. This will take place at between 10am and 12noon at the Enchanted café, 216 London road, Hadleigh, SS7 2PD.
